Digital Move
With the US destroying the existing world order and embracing fascism with the full support of the tech companies my desire to not give them a fucking dime has prompted a digital move.
One of the critical requirements for the move is to replace Google Photos. Google Photos isn't that complex, but there are few alternatives.
I decided to self host, with a VPS hosted in Europe. Setting up a server is time consuming and complex if your day to day doesn't involve Linux set up and admin. To make this easier I investigated a couple of solutions:
Yunohost is free and volunteer supported but when I installed it I ran into issues with configuration of php, It just didn't really work out of the box.
Cloudron is freemium in that it allows you to install two apps free. I installed NextCloud which provides a complete office suite and also supports photos. The other was Ghost, a Substack alternative and ported my WordPress blog over.
Importing over 30K photos and videos was not smooth. The import process seems to have lost or got confused with some metadata, most especially the timestamp on some photos. Importing also seemed not to respect or pick up on Albums well so I had to write a script to add photos to albums based on the directory they were in from the Google export.
Everything seems to be up and running now but I am still using Google Photos as a back up until I am comfortable.
